Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area or NCA is situated 112 miles west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. Considered to be the eighth wonder of the world and stretching across some 8,300 sq km, the Conservation Area boasts...

...a blend of landscapes, wildlife, people and archaeology that is unsurpassed in Africa. The area became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
Land in the conservation area is multi-use, it is unique in Tanzania as the only conservation area providing protection status for wildlife whilst allowing human habitation. The main feature of the NCA is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest unbroken, unflooded volcanic caldera. Unmatched for its natural variety, the crater floor consists of a number of ecological environments that include grassland, swamps, forests and Lake Makat, a central soda lake filled by the Munge river. Aside from herds of zebra, gazelle, and wildebeest, the crater is home to the "Big Five" of rhinoceros, lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. The area plays host to almost every individual species of wildlife in East Africa, with an estimated 25,000 animals within the crater of which half are zebra and wildebeest. There are also some leopards, cheetahs and three species of jackals.
